Walking to Japan

Last Tuesday night saw the offical launch of Ben Hutchings freakin AWESOME new newspaper-sized comic; WALKING TO JAPAN.

It was held at The Toff Building on Swanston Street in Melbourne's centre.

Up the cool ghetto stairs...

... and into the rockin book launch.

Pat Grant, was doing a reading of his soon to be released graphic novel BLUE later that evening.

Larry Boxshall.

I swear, the brothel lighting (whilst moody and cool) was HELL to photograph in. I had to shoot with my lens wide open and the ISO cranked as high as it would go for a usable photo. It was like being in the movie ALIENS where they're trapped in operations.

James Andre, Pat Grant and Andrew Fulton.

Ben's magazine comic was a hit.

What is Ben thinking?

Many local cartoonists came by to show support.

Ben was cranking out the signatures and pressing the flesh.

Writer, Poet, and head of publishing at Milk Shadow Books... James Andre.

Everyone had a great night. Congrats to Ben & James for launching such a beautiful comic in a classic big newspaper format. Go buy it!

DIGESTED.05 cover - (pt.4)

Cover is done... now I just need to write a short intro for the inside cover, and it's off to the publisher. Lets hope I can get it printed in time for Armageddon!

UPDATE: [3.46pm]
While I do want the protagonist to stand out in this cover, I think a slight shadow falling over his face would more realistically render the scene... as well as add to the forboding shadow being cast over the crowd.

So... (ahem)... THIS is the final cover.

Word Perversion #1

The Saturday just gone saw the stage reading of James Andre's book XXX NEON SIGN, and Ben Smith's SELF SATIRISED ANXIETY by their respective authors. Despite the pitch-black interior of the venue, I did try my best to take some usable photos of the event...

Ben Smith reading his book; SELF SATIRIZED ANXIETY.

The books being read were on sale, as well as an assortment of other independant stuff.

DIGESTED.05 cover - (pt.1)

Remember in my previous post, where I was really happy with myself on the final result of a panel...? well, carma has bitten me on the arse, because THIS proposed cover for the next issue (below left) isn't working for me... and I only just realised it after inking the f#!king page... Well, that's what I get for being cocky a few days ago.

I realised that the proposed cover idea (above left) is too similar to the previous issue#3 cover (above right)... You know, similar street-level point of view of the protagonist in a crowd, etc. Even though I know that the colours and arrangement on this new cover are different, I just feel like I'm falling back on muscle memory and not really trying.

But that's ok, because I've already pencilled in another cover (below), and I recon it'll be a ripper (IF I can pull it off).

As you can see it'll be a very dense and complicated scene, but I'm hoping the payoff in the end will be worth it. Watch this space.
